Jay Kornegay, Vice President of Race & Sportsbook at Westgate Resorts is among a panel of experts looking forward to addressing the inaugural Betting on Sports America conference in New Jersey this month.

As a strong advocate of Nevada’s long-standing expertise in the sports wagering space, he believes that the emerging US market still has much to learn from 40 years of sports betting experience in the Sagebrush State.

Expanding on that experience, Kornegay commented: “The Nevada operators have been operating in the ‘American’ market for four decades. We have molded the template during this time. This includes the proper internal controls, regulations and house rules. We’ve already experienced a lot of the pain that others might experience near term and we’ve already addressed that in our ICs, regulations and rules.”

Kornegay is also quick to point out that Nevada knows how this market wagers. “Fans prefer to root for things to happen (overs) rather than things not to happen (unders),” he said by way of example. “There are certain patterns, offerings, etc that this market prefers. It’s an immature market and simplification is needed at this time. The European market is more mature and understands all the options offered. The US market will get there sooner than later and new technology will assist in that process.”

As for the single key message he intends to share with delegates at Betting on Sports America? He put it succinctly: “States need strong lobbyists to make sure their state doesn’t over regulate and/or over tax this ‘new’ industry.”

Betting on Sports America boasts 175 leading industry speakers across 40 sessions, with 60 exhibitors displaying their latest products on the 61,000 sq ft exhibition floor at the Meadowlands Exposition Center.
