Loto-Québec has commented on the findings from the independent audit on money laundering and loan sharking in Québec casinos and gaming halls.

The corporation stated that it found many of the audit’s recommendations match the steps it has already taken to improve its own practices and address the difficulties associated with organised crime groups.

Loto-Québec President and CEO Jean-François Bergeron said: “We know that the fight against money laundering is an ongoing challenge, and we’re pleased to see that many of the audit’s recommendations pertain to measures that are already in place or about to be rolled out.

“For example, we’ll be automating our systems to home in on potentially questionable practices. We’ll also continue to collaborate with the various stakeholders involved in the fight against money laundering.”

Loto-Québec stated that it offered its full cooperation during the audit, which examined four pillars of intervention: money laundering, loan sharking, loyalty programs, and the independence and security of employees.

The report confirmed the independence of the corporation’s employees was not jeopardised at any time, and staff members have the necessary knowledge of the policies, procedures and processes to be followed in the course of their duties.

It also declared that there was no evidence of interference intended to stop internal investigations within the casinos.

Hélène F Fortin, Chairwoman of Loto-Québec’s Board of Directors, stated: “It’s reassuring for the Board to see that the report acknowledges Loto-Québec’s strong record of implementing its recommended actions and improvements.

“The Board will ensure that the Corporation maintains its efforts and continues to promote the use of best practices with regard to integrity within its gaming locations.”

Loto-Québec added that at its casinos, it provides a positive entertainment experience, and its gaming locations are safe thanks to a sophisticated, state-of-the-art security ecosystem. It also said it stays up-to-date on the best practices to fight against money laundering in order to promote order and moderation.
