Global Lottery Monitoring System (GLMS) has circulated its July 2020 newsletter updating members on the organisation’s latest activities, including its study on the integrity of sport sponsorship and a mid-term intelligence report.

Focusing on its report, “A Study of betting operators and their sponsorship of sport“, President Ludovico Calvi told members: “Our study illustrates how some betting operators use sponsorships with sports teams to market themselves to customers in jurisdictions where online betting is illegal.

“Clubs and sports who use certain types of betting sponsor may be, whether directly or indirectly, aiding and abetting the size of the illegal gaming industry in various parts of the world – and the size and lack of oversight of that black market directly allows match fixing to occur globally. The study also recommends a number of measures that can be taken to ensure that sport can effectively ensure that its betting sponsors are always compliant.”

Calvi went on to note that GLMS’ operations team is continuing to monitor sports competitions, analyzing suspicious betting patterns, and alerting cases to its partners and members, details of which can be seen in its mid-term Intelligence report.

The newsletter also offered a recap of GLMS’ involvement in the recent SBC Digital Summit North America during which it sponsored the Lottery Day, including the panel ‘Remaining Vigilant to Match Fixing’ featuring Art Manteris of Station Casinos, Oliver Lamb of Kambi, and US Integrity’s Matthew Holt.
